Youth Speaks!

7th March 2019

STUDENTS AWARDED THIRD PLACE

We are delighted to announce that on Thursday 28th February 2019, three Baysgarth students placed third in the regional Youth Speaks competition held at Wyke College, facilitated by Rotary District 1040!

The annual event challenges young people's public speaking abilities and performance, and persuasion and entertainment of the audience with their display of wit and knowledge on a current topic of their choice.

Ethan White (Year 10), Megan Beevers (Year 9) and Caitlin Taylor (Year 10) entered the Lincolnshire North Group and have worked hard for many weeks on their speech, which addressed issues around celebrities and their place in the law (celebrities don't face the same prosecutions as normal citizens).  They have researched the topic and formulated their own ideas and opinions around this, also building their confidence to speak in a public domain.

This is the very first time Baysgarth has entered the Youth Speaks competition, and we are incredibly proud of their efforts, dedication, performance and achievements.  In addition to the prestige of third place, Ethan, Megan and Caitlin were also awarded £100!

Miss Melia, who mentored the students, said:

It has been an absolute pleasure to work alongside Ethan, Megan and Caitlin.  They have presented themselves with grace, determination and have demonstrated a natural flair and passion for public speaking.  I can honestly say how all three students deserve sole recognition for this achievement; I merely facilitated their learning experiences, as we focused on improving our public speaking techniques.

These vital skills are not only needed for their GCSE, English Language studies but for many other factors of everyday life - such as preparing for college and job interviews, etc.

I look forward to how we might potentially progress with the competition, with more students to enter next year.

Ethan, Megan and Caitlin said:

We were honored to represent the school at such a prestigious event and were able to win third place on our first try.  We are determined to win next year, as we will have the confidence we gained from this year's experience!

Congratulations to everyone involved!  We look forward to future events...
