Today has seen the release of the Ofsted report for Baysgarth School, following the visit from the inspection team to the school on Tuesday 3rd October 2017. The Section 5 monitoring visit concluded that the school ‘has gone from strength to strength’ and is making ‘good progress on the journey to outstanding’.
Her Majesty’s Inspectors, Bernard Campbell and Michele Costello, visited lessons and spoke to students, Governors and school leaders. They also took account of the 146 responses from parents, 73 responses from staff and 82 responses from students to their online questionnaires.
They concluded that students are well cared for in the school, remarking that ‘The school provides strong support for pupils’ mental and emotional health and well-being … Pupils say they feel safe and that bullying is dealt with well.’
In terms of student achievement, Ofsted reported that ‘Overall progress was in the top 10% nationally … [and] current pupils are making strong progress in all year groups.’ In addition, pupils made ‘outstanding’ progress in English, strong progress in Science and good progress in Maths, with the most able students making particularly strong progress.
In the Sixth Form, they noted that in 2017 all students achieved their target grade or above and that ‘current students feel well supported for the next step in their careers.’
Inspectors praised the staff as they ‘demonstrate a shared commitment to meeting your high aspirations’ and the students who they said are ‘serious about their learning … proud of their new school building … [and] motivated to strive for success.’
In conclusion, Ofsted said school leaders were ‘implementing strategically a well-articulated long-term plan to make the school outstanding’. The school has ‘high aspirations, clear vision, strong drive and incisive actions … [which have] raised standards of attainment and accelerated pupils’ progress.’
The whole report will be available to view and download from the Ofsted website from Tuesday 31st October 2017 - https://reports.ofsted.gov.uk/
Head Teacher, Richard Briggs, said, ‘Last week saw the Grand Opening of the new school and a hugely successful Open Evening where we were bulging at the seams. In the last few days we have seen the publication of the performance league tables that show Baysgarth is the highest performing school in our part of North Lincolnshire and in the government’s own words from this website, “there is no better performing similar school within 75 miles of Baysgarth”. And now Ofsted have confirmed that Baysgarth is well on the way to becoming an Outstanding school. We are very proud of our achievements – we set out to be the first choice school for all the families in our community and now we are full in Year 7 and will be oversubscribed for every year group from now on. We draw our students from a fantastic community – they put their faith in us to deliver the best start in life for their sons and daughters and we are repaying that faith and support with excellent care and excellent outcomes’.
Chair of Governors, Peter Swann, said ‘this is obviously a very pleasing report which demonstrates that Baysgarth has met our first aim which was to give our community the very best standards locally. However, we do not rest on our laurels. This is just the first part of our journey. We will become an outstanding school to which others turn for advice. We will achieve this whilst providing a truly comprehensive education open to all. Congratulations to pupils and all staff - this report has been achieved through their sustained hard work’.
